Helcim POS Review 2027: Interchange Plus Pricing and Verdict
How we make money: CanComCo earns a commission from some POS and payments vendors when a business we refer signs up. Commission never changes a rating or a price we publish.

| No American Express rate. No cross-border or international card fee. No official country list: both helcim.com/countries and its international payments page returned errors. | |
| United States and Canada, inferred from US PIN debit and Canadian Interac pricing on the pricing page rather than from an availability page. Trustpilot lists a Calgary contact address. | |
| The only vendor we review that publishes an interchange-plus margin by volume band with discounts applied automatically. | |
| 54 published reviews in total, and Capterra's users score its card processing 3.0 and its online payments 2.5. |

Helcim Pricing: What You'll Actually Pay
Helcim publishes more about its pricing structure than anyone else we review, and it publishes a different kind of number. Understanding that difference is most of what this section is for.
Interchange plus, by volume band
There are no subscription tiers. Every account pays $0 a month, and the published figure is a margin Helcim adds on top of interchange, not an all-in rate.
| Monthly card volume | In person | Keyed and online |
|---|---|---|
| Interchange + 0.40% + 8 cents | Interchange + 0.50% + 25 cents | |
| Interchange + 0.35% + 7 cents | Interchange + 0.45% + 20 cents | |
| Interchange + 0.25% + 7 cents | Interchange + 0.35% + 20 cents | |
| $500K to $1M | Interchange + 0.20% + 6 cents | Interchange + 0.25% + 15 cents |
| $1M to $5M | Interchange + 0.15% + 6 cents | Interchange + 0.15% + 15 cents |
Above $5 million a month, the page directs merchants to contact sales.
The discount is automatic. Helcim sets your band from the average of your last three months of processing volume, and states there is no renegotiation, no plan upgrade and no minimum commitment. Every other vendor we review either publishes a flat rate that never improves without a sales call, or publishes no rate at all.
Keyed is not penalised. Helcim prices keyed and card-not-present in the same column as online. Most vendors charge keyed at a premium: Square charges 3.5% + 15 cents keyed on every plan, including the $149 one.
WHY YOU CANNOT PUT THIS NEXT TO SQUARE'S 2.6%
Helcim publishes a margin. Square publishes an all-in rate. These are not the same kind of number and comparing them directly produces a wrong answer.
On $40,000 a month across 800 card transactions in the entry band, Helcim's margin is $40,000 x 0.0040 = $160.00, plus 800 x $0.08 = $64.00, giving $224.00. Your interchange sits on top of that, and Helcim does not publish it because nobody can: interchange depends on which cards your customers present.
Square's all-in cost on the same volume is $40,000 x 0.026 = $1,040.00 plus 800 x $0.15 = $120.00, giving $1,160.00, with nothing to add.
$224.00 is not the Helcim bill and $1,160.00 is not twice it. To compare the two honestly you need your own effective rate from a current statement. Ask Helcim to quote your actual card mix.
You will also see "1.79% + 8 cents" attached to Helcim on its own industry pages. That is a stated average, not the pricing page's rate, and nobody should sign on the basis of it.
What a zero fee list actually means here
Helcim publishes $0 for monthly, signup, PCI, cancellation, statement, minimum, software and annual fees, $0 for card and customer data migration, $0 on a chargeback resolved in your favour, and equipment sold rather than leased. Merchant accounts are created instantly and signup costs nothing.
And it publishes the exceptions, which is what makes the claim credible.
| Charge | Amount |
|---|---|
| Chargeback you lose | $15 (and $0 if resolved in your favour) |
| Rejected ACH, NSF or return | $5 per rejected transaction |
| Recurring payments | An extra 0.4% per transaction |
| Refunds | No Helcim fee, but the original transaction's processing fee still applies |
| Optional 4G data for the Smart Terminal | $7 a month |
| PCI compliance | $0, with an annual self-assessment to complete |
One structural thing to understand about interchange-plus: interchange itself changes, typically in April and October, and Helcim states that cost changes pass through automatically. Your margin is fixed by band. Your underlying cost is not.
Bank transfers are where the real saving is
ACH and EFT-PAD cost 0.5% + 25 cents, capped at $6, with an extra 0.05% on amounts over $25,000. The cap is the point.
A $5,000 INVOICE
By ACH: 0.5% of $5,000 is $25.00, plus 25 cents, is $25.25, which the cap reduces to $6.00.
By card on Square's published 2.6% + 15 cents: $130.15.
That is $124.15 saved on one invoice, a factor of 21.7. For any business invoicing other businesses, this single line is worth more than the card margin.
Hardware
| Item | Price | Over 3 years |
|---|---|---|
| Smart Terminal | $349 per unit plus shipping | $9.69 a month |
| Smart Terminal, financed | $32 a month for 1 year, totalling $384 | A 10.0% premium over the $349 cash price |
| Card Reader | $199 per unit plus shipping | $5.53 a month |
| Tap to Pay on iPhone | No device cost | Plus 10 cents per transaction |
Equipment is sold, not leased. A 10% premium to spread a $349 terminal over a year is modest: for contrast, our Clover review documents 36-month device financing at a 65% premium over the cash price. No receipt printer, cash drawer or barcode scanner appears on Helcim's pricing page.
REAL MONTHLY COST
A business doing $40,000 a month across 800 card transactions, entry band, one Smart Terminal:
Subscription: $0
Helcim margin: $160.00 + $64.00 = $224.00
Interchange: not published, and not publishable. Get this from your current statement.
Hardware over three years: $9.69
Known monthly total: $233.69, plus interchange.
What crossing a band is worth. The same volume in the top published band ($1M to $5M) costs $40,000 x 0.0015 = $60.00 plus 800 x $0.06 = $48.00, giving $108.00. That is a 51.8% cut in the margin line, applied without a phone call.

Helcim Features: What Works and What Doesn't
Written from Helcim's published pages and from review data on G2, Capterra and Trustpilot. No one at CanComCo has operated this product.
It is a processor with a POS, not a POS platform
G2 files Helcim under Payment Processing and Omnichannel Commerce. Neither is a point-of-sale category, and that placement matches the product. No menu or catalog management, inventory, barcode scanning, split checks, tip pooling, kitchen display, table management, loyalty, gift cards or offline mode was confirmed on the pages we read. Treat those as unconfirmed rather than proven absent, but the shape is clear: the strength is the rate card, not the till. A retailer needing stock control or a restaurant needing coursing should read our Lightspeed or Toast reviews instead.
The pricing structure is the product
Interchange-plus with the margin printed by band, discounts applied automatically from trailing volume, and no subscription at all. That is a deliberate commercial design rather than a feature list, and it is the reason to consider Helcim. It rewards growth without a renegotiation, and it removes the leased-terminal trap that this market is full of.
Payments breadth
Card present, keyed, online, ACH and EFT-PAD, recurring payments at an extra 0.4%, US PIN debit at standard interchange-plus rates, and Canadian Interac Debit at 9 cents per transaction or 12 cents for tap. Tap to Pay on iPhone turns a phone into the terminal with no hardware cost. What is absent from the published pricing is an American Express rate and any cross-border or international card fee, both of which are live questions for a business taking foreign cards.
What Helcim's own users score lowest
Capterra publishes feature-level scores for this listing, which is unusual and worth reading closely. Online Payments scores 2.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews and Debit/Credit Card Processing scores 3.0 from 7. Those are tiny samples and we are not going to treat them as settled, but they sit on the product's core function, and they are the lowest numbers anywhere on the listing. Alongside them: Data Security 3.9 (8), Payment Fraud Prevention 3.7 (9), Billing and Invoicing 3.6 (9), Multiple Payment Options 3.4 (8).
Integrations
QuickBooks Online and Xero are named as direct integrations. Helcim's own Payment Extension is sold as needing no code, no API and no gateway. WooCommerce, Odoo and Freshline appear on its wholesale pages; Jane App and SimplePractice on its healthcare pages; Jobber, Workiz and Housecall Pro on its transportation page. Every one of those comes from an industry marketing page rather than an integrations directory, which we did not read. Confirm any integration you depend on before you commit.
Feature claims verified against helcim.com, Capterra and G2 on November 5, 2026.
Hardware and Setup
Helcim sells two devices and prices both. The Smart Terminal is $349 per unit plus shipping, or $32 a month on a one-year plan. The Card Reader is $199 plus shipping. Optional 4G data for the Smart Terminal is $7 a month, for use away from wifi. Tap to Pay on iPhone carries no device cost at all and adds 10 cents per transaction, which makes it the cheapest way to start taking cards on this platform.
The structural point is that equipment is sold, not leased. Helcim publishes "No contracts, leases, termination fees or cancellation fees", and in a market where multi-year terminal leases are routine that removes the most expensive trap a small merchant can walk into. Financing the Smart Terminal over a year costs $384 against $349 in cash, a 10.0% premium, which is disclosed arithmetic rather than a hidden cost.
What is not on the pricing page: any receipt printer, cash drawer or barcode scanner, any bundle, and any supported-device list for Tap to Pay. Price those separately and confirm your iPhone model before relying on it.
On setup, Helcim states that signup costs nothing and that a merchant account is created instantly. Its industry pages state signup takes "as little as 5-minutes", which is an onboarding claim rather than a go-live timeline. No full setup timeline is published, so we give none.

Customer Support: What to Expect When Things Break
Capterra scores Customer Service 4.0 out of 5 from 34 reviews, Helcim's highest published category. On 34 reviews that is encouraging rather than conclusive.
What is not published, and what we did not research: the support channel list, hours, time zones, languages and any status page. We are not going to tell you that phone, chat or a dedicated rep is available, because we did not read a page that says so. Helcim operates in the US and Canada and publishes Canadian Interac pricing, so French-language support is plausible and unverified.
The most useful support evidence is on Trustpilot, which publishes an AI-generated summary of 236 recent reviews. It describes a mostly positive experience, with praise for the platform being intuitive and for staff providing patient onboarding. It also names four recurring criticisms: unexpected delays, issues with business account management, long phone hold times and inconsistent support answers. Long hold times implies phone support exists; we are reporting Trustpilot's summary, not confirming a channel list.
Helcim has replied to 96% of its negative Trustpilot reviews, typically within 48 hours, and has held a claimed profile there since April 2016.
One cost note that belongs here rather than in pricing: PCI compliance is $0, but it carries an annual self-assessment you have to complete.

Helcim Pros and Cons
Pros
- Interchange-plus published by volume band. From 0.40% + 8 cents in person down to 0.15% + 6 cents. No other vendor we review publishes this structure at all.
- The discount is automatic. Set from your trailing three-month average, with no renegotiation, no plan upgrade and no minimum commitment. Crossing a band cuts the margin without a phone call.
- A zero fee list with the exceptions printed. $0 monthly, signup, PCI, cancellation, statement, minimum, software, annual and data migration. The $15 lost chargeback, $5 rejected ACH and 0.4% recurring surcharge are published too, which is what makes the rest believable.
- Bank transfers priced like bank transfers. ACH and EFT-PAD at 0.5% + 25 cents capped at $6. A $5,000 invoice costs $6.00 to collect against $130.15 on a card.
- Equipment sold, not leased. $349 Smart Terminal, $199 Card Reader, Tap to Pay on iPhone at no device cost. Financing the terminal over a year carries a 10.0% premium, disclosed.
- Keyed is not penalised. Keyed and online share one column. Square charges 3.5% + 15 cents keyed on every plan.
Cons
- 54 published reviews in total. 19 on G2, 35 on Capterra. Square Point of Sale carries 3,036 on Capterra alone, 56 times the sample.
- Its own users score the core function lowest. Capterra's feature-level scores put Online Payments at 2.5 from 8 reviews and Debit/Credit Card Processing at 3.0 from 7. Small samples, and on exactly the thing Helcim sells.
- You cannot compare it on one number. The published figure is a margin, not an all-in rate. Without your own card mix from a current statement, Helcim cannot be placed beside Square's 2.6%.
- No Amex rate and no cross-border fee published. Both are real gaps against Square, which publishes a 1.5% international card fee.
- No official country list. Both helcim.com/countries and the international payments page returned errors. US and Canada are inferred from the pricing page's debit entries.
- It is not a POS platform. No inventory, catalog, kitchen display, table management, loyalty or offline mode was confirmed. G2 does not even file it in a POS category.
This profile suits a business whose processing margin is its largest controllable cost, especially one invoicing other businesses by bank transfer, and one willing to work out its own effective rate. It frustrates a buyer who needs a single comparable number, and any retail or restaurant operator who needs the till to do real work.
What Real Users Say About Helcim
Helcim has the thinnest published review record of any vendor we cover, and the most detailed feature-level scoring. Both facts matter.
| Source | Score | Reviews | Scope | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| G2 | 3.9 / 5 | 19 | Listed under Payment Processing and Omnichannel Commerce, not a POS category. Claimed and managed by Helcim with limited features. No category scores published, and its reviewer synthesis sits behind a login. | Nov 5, 2027 |
| Capterra | 3.7 / 5 | 35 | Listing sits under the legacy slug "Virtual-Terminal". Ease of Use 3.9 (35), Features 3.8 (34), Value for Money 3.9 (33), Customer Service 4.0 (34). Sentiment 66% positive, 9% neutral, 26% negative, the weakest split in this comparison set. No pros-and-cons summary labels published. Starting price shown as "Contact vendor", no free version listed, free trial not available. Last updated October 19, 2027. | Nov 5, 2027 |
| Trustpilot | 4.1 / 5, "Great" | 1,117 | Excluded from our rating, because the page rates the company rather than the POS product. Distribution: 77% five-star, 17% one-star, 2% each at four, three and two. Claimed since April 2016, on a paid Trustpilot subscription, with a 96% reply rate to negative reviews. Contact address in Calgary. | Nov 5, 2027 |
| Apple App Store and Google Play | Not researched | Not covered in this research pass. |
How the 3.8 was calculated. The unweighted mean of the product-specific published scores: G2 3.9 + Capterra 3.7 = 7.6, divided by 2 = 3.8. Trustpilot is excluded by method.
The method is not the problem here. Weighted by review count the figure would be 3.77, a difference of 0.03. On most pages we publish, an unweighted mean of uneven samples moves the number by a tenth or more. It does not here, because the two samples are similar in size and the two scores are 0.2 apart. The caveat on this page is the total sample, not the arithmetic.
Capterra's feature-level scores are the most interesting data on this page, and no other vendor we review publishes them.
| Feature | Score | Reviews |
|---|---|---|
| Data Security | 3.9 | 8 |
| Payment Fraud Prevention | 3.7 | 9 |
| Billing and Invoicing | 3.6 | 9 |
| Multiple Payment Options | 3.4 | 8 |
| Debit/Credit Card Processing | 3.0 | 7 |
| Online Payments | 2.5 | 8 |
Seven and eight reviews cannot settle anything, and we are not treating them as a verdict. But the two lowest scores on the listing sit on card processing and online payments, which is what Helcim sells. If you are shortlisting it, ask about card-not-present reliability specifically.
Trustpilot's own summary of 236 recent reviews names praise for an intuitive platform and patient onboarding staff, and criticism covering unexpected delays, business account management, long phone hold times and inconsistent support answers. Note the shape of its distribution: 77% at five stars and 17% at one, with almost nothing in between.

Square POS
Consider this if you want one comparable flat rate and a real POS feature set.
Every figure is published and you can model it in a minute: Free at $0 a month, Plus $49, Premium $149, Pro on custom pricing above $250,000 a year, all per location. In-person rates are published per plan at 2.6% + 15 cents, 2.5% + 15 cents and 2.4% + 15 cents, online at 3.3% or 2.9% + 30 cents, keyed at 3.5% + 15 cents throughout. A 30-day trial on the paid plans, cancel or switch anytime, and Capterra scores Square Point of Sale 4.6 from 3,036 reviews. You give up: cost at volume. Square never improves on 2.6% + 15 cents in person without a custom deal above $250,000 a year, where Helcim's margin drops automatically at $50,000 a month.
Free plan available.
-
Lightspeed Retail
Consider this if the business is actually retail and needs stock control rather than a cheaper rate.
Basic $89, Core $149 and Plus $289 a month, with purchase orders, PO sync and landed costs on every tier, 24/7 phone and chat support, and Capterra scoring it 4.0 from 976 reviews. You give up: Helcim's pricing transparency. Lightspeed publishes a 1.5% card-present rate and no card-not-present rate at all, and charges $89 a month before any processing. Note: Capterra lists Lightspeed's starting price as $109 while Lightspeed's own page says $89.
From $89/month.
-
Global Payments
Consider this where a bank-backed processor with named POS plans is a procurement requirement.
It publishes three plans, Essentials at $0, Advanced at $42 and Complete at $129 a month, each at 2.6% + $0.10 per transaction, so there is a subscription product to point at. You give up: Helcim's interchange-plus economics and its zero fee list. Global Payments footnotes its own prices as illustrative and subject to underwriting, publishes no contract length or termination fee, and its Capterra listing scores 2.4 from 54 reviews with value for money at 1.9. Read our review before you shortlist it.

Helcim FAQ
How much does Helcim cost?
$0 a month. There are no subscription tiers, no minimums, no software fee and no statement fee. Helcim makes its money on the processing margin, which it publishes as interchange plus 0.40% and 8 cents in person for merchants under $50,000 a month, falling to interchange plus 0.15% and 6 cents above $1 million.
What does "interchange plus" actually mean for my bill?
Interchange is the wholesale cost the card networks charge, and it varies by the cards your customers present. Helcim publishes only the margin it adds on top. So your bill is interchange plus that margin, and nobody can quote you an all-in number without seeing your card mix. Take a current processing statement to the quote.
Is Helcim cheaper than Square?
Probably, at volume, but you cannot prove it from the published figures alone. Helcim publishes a margin and Square publishes an all-in rate, and those are different kinds of number. What is comparable: Square's in-person rate never improves below 2.6% + 15 cents without a custom deal above $250,000 a year, while Helcim's margin drops automatically at $50,000 a month, then again at $100,000, $500,000 and $1 million.
Is there a contract or a cancellation fee?
No. Helcim publishes "No contracts, leases, termination fees or cancellation fees", and equipment is sold rather than leased, which removes the multi-year terminal lease common in this market.
What does Helcim's hardware cost?
The Smart Terminal is $349 per unit plus shipping, or $32 a month for a year, which totals $384, a 10.0% premium over the cash price. The Card Reader is $199 plus shipping. Tap to Pay on iPhone has no device cost and adds 10 cents per transaction. Optional 4G data for the Smart Terminal is $7 a month.
Are there any fees Helcim does not advertise as zero?
Yes, and it publishes them. $15 on a chargeback you lose, $0 on one resolved in your favour. $5 per rejected ACH, NSF or return. An extra 0.4% per transaction on recurring payments. On a refund there is no Helcim fee, but the original transaction's processing fee is not returned. PCI compliance costs $0 and requires an annual self-assessment.
Which countries does Helcim serve?
We could not confirm an official list. Both helcim.com/countries and its international payments page returned errors. The pricing page publishes US PIN debit and Canadian Interac Debit rates, so the United States and Canada are clear, and Trustpilot lists a Calgary contact address. No American Express rate and no cross-border or international card fee is published anywhere we read.
Is Helcim a full POS system?
No. G2 files it under Payment Processing and Omnichannel Commerce rather than any point-of-sale category. No inventory, catalog management, barcode scanning, kitchen display, table management, loyalty, gift cards or offline mode was confirmed on the pages we read. It is a processor with a point of sale attached. For a real till, look at Square, Lightspeed or Toast.
Is Helcim Right for Your Business?
Helcim publishes a commercial structure almost nobody else in this market will put in writing. The margin is printed by volume band, the discount applies automatically from your trailing three-month average with no renegotiation, the fee list is genuinely zero where competitors charge, and the exceptions are printed rather than buried: $15 on a lost chargeback, $5 on a rejected ACH, 0.4% on recurring payments. Equipment is sold, not leased. Bank transfers are capped at $6, which turns a $5,000 invoice from $130.15 on a card into $6.00. For a business where processing margin is the largest controllable cost, or one invoicing other businesses, that combination is hard to beat and it is all checkable.
What you have to accept is work and uncertainty. Interchange-plus means your real cost needs your own statement to calculate, and the "1.79% + 8 cents" figure floating around Helcim's industry pages is an average, not a quote. No American Express rate, no cross-border fee and no official country list is published, and two different Helcim pages returned errors when we looked for one. The published review record is 54 reviews against Square's 3,036 on Capterra alone, and within that record its users score card processing 3.0 and online payments 2.5 on samples of seven and eight. The till itself is thin: G2 does not file this as a POS at all. Shortlist Helcim on the rate card, take a current processing statement to the quote, ask specifically about card-not-present reliability, and look elsewhere if you need the point of sale to do real work.
